Abstract

The objective of this thesis is to analyze the poetic work of Paul Durcan in terms of his treatment of religion, a question usually approached in a superficial and sometimes partial way, which allows the researcher to reach unpublished conclusions in the critical corpus about the poet. The research methodology specifies each element of the poetic work: the sacred and the profane, the Church / society relationship, religion and religiosity. The last chapter concentrates the analysis of the abundant material selected, which includes ethical-philosophical concepts, social issues and a complete immersion in the different levels of responsibility of the Catholic Church, to conclude with the determination of the “sacred space” or intimate Durcan territory. The work delves into the contents of his poetry to overcome the stereotypical image that a certain critic made of him. From the conclusions we will discover an exhaustive Durcan in its contents about the Church and its members, controversial and coherent in the development of his ideas and, above all, a sincere and committed critic. The thesis is exhaustive and innovative in the analysis of religion, reaches well-founded conclusions, and opens new ways of research.
