Resumo

This paper presents new evidence regarding the factors that determine Spanish maritime goods transport firm’ssurvival. Using information extracted from different databases, semi-parametric and non-parametric survivalanalysis techniques are applied in order to determine the effect of a large set of explanatory variables on the survivalof maritime goods transport. The results obtained allow us to establish business profiles with higher survival. Thus, the firms whose main typeof transport of liquid bulks, roll-on/roll-off goods transport and the container segments present better survivalprospects. Secondly, the legal requirements for their constitution confer greater resistance to limited companies incomparison with other corporate forms. Lastly, and as it might be expected financial strength, negotiation powerwith their suppliers and the perception of state aid have a significant influence in this regard.
