Abstract

The objective of this paper is to study the interaction between the ports located in the Iberian Peninsula in relationto container traffic. In particular, the causal relationships between Portuguese and Spanish ports, betweenAndalusia and the rest of ports in the Iberian Peninsula, and between all Andalusian ports are analysed. To thisend, monthly series of container traffic statistics expressed in TEUS for Spain and Portugal from January 2014 toMarch 2018 have been used. As a methodology, the econometric approach suggested by Toda and Yamamoto(1995) has been used to determine the direction of the Granger causal relationship among the variables considered.By applying Toda-Yamamoto causality tests, first of all, it was determined that there is a unidirectional causalrelationship from Portugal to Spain, with the Portuguese port of Sines holding a leading position over thePortuguese ports. Second, the ports in Andalusia have a bidirectional causal relationship with ports in the rest ofSpain. Finally, at the Andalusian level, it should be noted the great importance of the Algeciras port, especially inthe traffic of goods in transit, and the unidirectional causal relationship from the Huelva port to Seville port. Finally, the main conclusions are summarised based on the results obtained in relation to the causal interactionsthat occur between the ports in the Iberian Peninsula.
