Abstract
A detailed analysis of different bioerosion structures located in the artifacts and architectural structures from the mole of the Lanterna in Portus has been carried out. Such bioerosion was realized by endolytic and epilithic communities and has allowed to differentiate various ichnological and ecological zonations. The recognized ichnogenera are: Entobia, Caulostrepsis, Maeandropolydora and Gastrochaenolites for the zonation of boring organisms; Centrichnus and Pyrodendrina for the encrusting ones; and the ecological zonation of epilithic cementing organisms constituted by the bivalve Ostrea edulis. In the same way, a correspondence has been established between the phases of colonization of the communities, the deposit and the modification suffered by the artifacts and the architectural structures before their preservation. The information obtained both from the zonations and the taphonomic analysis has allowed to specify the paleoenvironmental conditions of the site during its activity, i.e.: an environment of very shallow waters, rich in nutrients, with normal salinity and low energy. Such dePositional setting would evolve towards a sediment filling of the site, subaerial exposure before the definitive abandonment, burial and conservation.
