Abstract

The exponential growth of port traffic in particular and the economy in general during the early stages Of the Empire brought about a notable expansion and modification of the urban centers controlled by Rome. In this way, the big port cities became connecting nodes of a trade and communication system that was vital for the growth and sustainability not only ofthe state machinery but also ofthe local and Provincial elites themselves, who were greatly benefited from the economic flourishing. At this point, the port infrastructures and especially the areas of the large urban centers as spaces for the management, storage and purchase and sale of products Will acquire a capital importance, multiplying their copies along all the port fronts that were being developed. Aspects such as the ownership ofthese multifunctional spaces, their management, administration and the role they played in both the annona and C0mmercial tramc systems are still difficult to specify today, although their operation seems to conform to the same modus operandi found with Other groups such as the collegia navicularii, negotiators or mercatores.
