Abstract

Coinciding with the quixotic declaration "An honorable and married woman belongs barefoot in the kitchen", in 2013 the director, Diego Galán titled his documentary "Barefoot in the kitchen". A large portion of the film shows, with a great deal of irony, the role of women as represented on television and the big screen during the rule of Franco: The ideal woman being selfless, folkloric, mother and submissive wife. However, in this same Spain, there existed a group of women who rejected this notion of staying home "barefoot and pregnant". They had a vision in direct opposition to the woman represented on screen. These woman traveled, discovered other worlds and took refuge in their writings. They discretely proposed a change in the national imaginary of the traditional Spanish woman.
