The history of the Spanish educational system is characterized, among other things, by an unínterrupted series of reforms, accompanied by a huge volume of legislation. On many occasions, this succession of reforms has reflected the changes ín the political regírne and government and their consequent deological struggles. In this chapter, the genesis and development of the Spanish educational system is described in a necessarily summarized way. The purpose is to offer a basic, sufficiently instructive idea of this long and complex process, in which some relevant referentes and milestones have been chosen: the main laws that have given legal consistency to the fundamental educational reforms of that historical cycle of more than two hundred years (1812-2020) in which the educational centers are currently framed.
