Abstract

This work is about prehistoric copper mining in the South Portuguese Zone, from the first data provided by mining engineers to the latest archaeometallurgical investigations. Emphasis is placed on the use of stone hammers, which throughout the Bronze Age have notches or grooves for the handle, in a very superficial mining of trenches and tasting pits that does not go down from the oxidation zone for the extraction of copper carbonates and their treatment in reduction vessels.
