Resumo

The digital inclusion of people with disabilities in social media could have a direct impact on their access to information, equal opportunities and empowerment, and therefore on their quality of life and ability to actively participate in society. This research aims to understand the use and impact of social media by people with disabilities from an inclusive, educational, visibility and empowerment perspective. This compendium of publications includes a first case study, carried out in a special education centre in Cantabria, which analyses educational experiences for the promotion of the safe and responsible use of the media and social media by students. The second investigation examines the perception of the different educational agents (families, professionals and users with disabilities) of an occupational centre in the Autonomous Community of Madrid on the use, opportunities, barriers and changes produced by the COVID-19 pandemic in relation to social media. The third and fourth articles are content analyses of the accounts of influencers with intellectual and physical disabilities, respectively, with the aim of exploring the uses of social media by the content creators and their collaborations with brands. The findings suggest the importance of social media as a tool that promotes diversity and the representation of people with disabilities online, improving users' awareness of diversity and promoting opportunities for the education and personal and professional development of people with disabilities.
