Abstract

This research approaches the specialized knowledge of a primary school teacher about the classification of plane figures. To that end, it is based on the 'Mathematics Teacher's Specialized Knowledge' -MTSK- model. The methodology followed is qualitative section, framed within an interpretative paradigm and with a case study design. The classroom observations have been the instrument used to collect information. The data has been analyzed by two analytic instruments: first, by the different characteristics of the MTSK subdomain categories; second, by the analysis instrument of the manifestations of the primary school teacher's conception in relation to the Teaching and Learning of Mathematic -CEAM-. This is aimed to identify and understand the elements of the different MTSK subdomains of the teacher related to the teaching of polygons, as well as the possible relations between subdomains and also to detect the Mathematic teaching and learning conceptions and its relation to the subdomains of the specialized knowledge of the teacher regarding the teaching of polygons, thus obtaining an integrated vision of the teacher's MTSK. This analysis allowed the identification and understanding of the specialized Mathematic knowledge for the teaching of a primary school teacher with respect to teaching polygons. In the chapter on the discussion of results and conclusions, we deal with the different conception categories of the primary school teacher regarding the Teaching and Learning of Mathematic related to the specialized knowledge subdomains; and the different subdomains of the MTSK professional knowledge model which have been witnessed in the teacher. The conclusions established by this research reflect the complex nature of the teacher knowledge and how the conceptions strengthen the teacher knowledge understanding, particularly in the classification of plane figures.
