Abstract

In search for sustainable and integral development of the present ecological crisis, we have not yet managed to adopt a circular model of production. A commitment is essential from scientific research and industry to seek comprehensive solutions to protect the ecosystems. An urgent challenge in this context is the environmental impact of plastic waste. Replacing one plastic with another, conventional plastics for bioplastics without replacing the mentality, is not a comprehensive solution. However, the development of bio-based and biodegradable plastics may be an alternative to minimise the environmental risks of these wastes. This article presents the research carried out on the development of biodegradable bioplastic materials obtained from by-products and waste from the agri-food industry with the intention of covering specialised applications that allow a reduction of some of the impacts throughout the product life cycle of plastics
