Resumen
Body dissatisfaction is an issue associated with an increased risk of suicide and poorer quality of life. Such dissatisfaction can be generated by social comparison and exposure to unrealistic body models through social media. This study is a replication of a research conducted in the Netherlands in 2016 which analysed the influence of exposure to edited Instagram photos on the perception of body image in an adolescent population. In the present study, an experiment was conducted with 104 Spanish university girls who were randomly exposed to edited photos with filters, original photos, or landscape photos. The young women’s perception of their body image after exposure was measured. Compared to the original article, a third condition was introduced with landscape photos, participants’ attention to the photos was measured, and a pre-questionnaire was conducted to assess the editing of the stimulus photos. No significant differences were found between the groups. All this may lead us to consider age-related variables as influential in the relationship between exposure to photos on social networks and the perception of one’s own body image.
