The shifting profile of Africa in twenty-first century Black Canadian writing

Resumen

El vínculo afectivo con África fue visible en aquellas obras de Black Canadian compuestas a fines de los años ochenta y principios de los noventa. Por el contrario, el perfil de África ha cambiado para las generaciones más jóvenes de escritores negros de la diáspora en Canadá. El propósito de este artículo es abrir una conversación sobre cómo los afectos de los canadienses negros, tanto en lo que respecta a la identidad nacional como a la conexión con la patria, parecen haber cambiado aproximadamente después de 2000. Para hacerlo, analizo Las aventuras de la niña negra en su búsqueda de Dios(2017), una reinterpretación de la dramaturga canadiense negra Lisa Codrington del cuento de 1932 de George Bernard Shaw del mismo título. Su obra fue un hito en la historia de la escritura canadiense negra, porque por primera vez se invitó a un dramaturgo canadiense negro (y también a una mujer) a participar en uno de los festivales de teatro más prestigiosos y antiguos de Canadá, el Festival Shaw.
