Abstract

In this communication, the first advances in the results of a research project for applying Design for Environment Methodologies (DFE) to a chemical industry in Huelva are shown. This factory provides the raw material needed for manufacturing a great number of products used in several economical sectors, such as those of plastics components for automobiles companies. The main objective of our research is to contribute to make their productive processes more sustainable, with smaller consumption of resources and smaller environmental impacts, and at the same time accomplishing the functional, technical and economics expectations of the diverse users along all their life cycle. Although be laudable the fact that many chemical industries have established standardized environmental management systems, as ISO 14001 or the Regulation EMAS, the reality is that these do not guarantee the sustainability of their processes. Besides, many chemical industries, do not know the possibilities and advantages of the utilization of other environmental management methodologies, such as Ecodesign or Environmental Value Analysis.
